Key Apprenticeship Program: Building Careers in Clean Energy and Construction

The Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) is a new initiative by the Australian Government designed to strengthen the nation’s skilled workforce in clean energy and housing construction. Through two dedicated streams, the program offers direct financial support to eligible apprentices. As a result, it reduces financial stress and supports Australia’s long-term infrastructure and sustainability goals.

Clean Energy Apprenticeships (NEA) Stream

This stream supports apprentices working in clean energy roles. Specifically, these roles include:

  • Designing, constructing and maintaining clean energy infrastructure
  • Transmitting renewable and low emissions energy
  • Installing technologies that replace fossil fuel systems

As Australia transitions to a low emissions future, this stream plays a vital role in building a workforce ready to lead in clean energy.

Housing Construction Apprenticeships (HCA) Stream

This stream focuses on apprentices working in residential construction. For example, roles may involve:

  • Building and remodelling homes and residential facilities
  • Supporting the nation’s increasing demand for affordable housing

In doing so, the HCA stream helps address the housing shortage while providing valuable career pathways. Moreover, by upskilling new talent, it directly contributes to housing growth and community development across the country.

Financial Support in the Key Apprenticeship Program

Apprentices undertaking eligible roles can access the following financial benefits:

  • Up to $10,000 for full-time apprenticeships

  • Up to $5,000 for part-time apprenticeships

  • Payments made at key milestones: 6, 12, 24 and 36 months plus upon completion

This means apprentices can focus on their training without being burdened by financial pressure. Consequently, it boosts retention and supports long-term career development.
