AGA in Bairnsdale this week welcomed the first students to their Work Safely in the Solar Industry training course, which is being conducted at AGA’s training facility on the Princes Hwy.
The solar safety training has been developed specifically to support local businesses working in the solar industry, after the Victorian Government made safety training mandatory for all people working in this space.
Employees of solar-based businesses in Bairnsdale and surrounds had until now experienced difficulty in accessing this mandatory training, with many training centres located too far away or unable to accommodate numbers after the Victorian Government decision.
Paul, from [Moncrieff Electrical has a team of three employees in attendance. “We want to make sure we’re doing the right thing, keeping the boys safe and up to date” he says. “It’s a good opportunity to improve the standard of the industry and make it safer.”
Designed to support businesses who are involved in the maintenance and installation of solar systems, the training covers essential safety topics including working with heights, safety equipment usage, safety for the solar industry and first aid.
Jayden, a first year apprentice, feels like the course has helped him get an edge over others starting out. “It’s good, I get to learn more, and get extra qualifications in the long run” he says.
By providing a local training option for solar traders in the area, AGA hopes to ensure access to quality training for this growth industry while continuing their support of local businesses and tradespeople.
“We’ll have the course available so businesses and employers know they’re getting good employees from day one. Apprentices can come through and be ready to go” says Warwick Baum of AGA.
The first cohort of 12 students commenced their training in early September with a one-day solar unit, and will complete their other units on additional training days to follow. Supported by local businesses A1 Solar and Moncrieff Electrical, AGA’s solar safety course and all attending students are set to enjoy a bright future.
