“I’m someone who likes to get in and do something rather than sit in an office and I like figuring out the mechanics of everything and how it works.”
Renee completed a fitting and turning (Engineering – Mechanical trade) apprenticeship with AGA in 2009.
In 2009, Renee’s ability in her trade was recognised when she won the Best Apprentice in the Gippsland Region and Best Apprentice – Engineering Trade awards at the annual AGA Apprentice Awards evening.
I chose this trade because I prefer working with my hands. I’m someone who likes to get in and do something rather than sit in an office and I like figuring out the mechanics of everything and how it works.
It was probably a few months before I applied. I spent some time working casually because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and then thought about applying for an apprenticeship.
I had some friends who had completed apprenticeships with AGA and I thought being a female apprentice in a traditional trade it might be a better way to go, because of the additional support and back up you have from the field officers at AGA.
Most of the placements I have been to have been excellent – there’s some places I wish I could spend a bit longer in but being a fitter the scope of placements is fairly broad … for example ranging from a small machine shop to fitting in the Power stations!
My instructor has been really good to work with. The instructors at AGA try to make your training as relevant as possible to your workplace.
The support from my instructor, the flexibility of the training delivery, the variety of learning different skills from various employers. If you work for a private employer sometimes the work is limited but working with AGA I have had the opportunity to work as a diesel mechanic for some time, I worked in a machine shop and also at Hazelwood Mine so I have had a great variety of work.
Winning Apprentice of the year and Best in Trade Apprentice for Gippsland in 2009.
I have also been given the opportunity to complete my Diploma in Engineering at the same time as my trade apprenticeship.
I’d like to get back into fitting but it looks like I may be getting some machine work right now which will also be great.
