Mother-Daughter Team Thrive in Dream Jobs at Local School

Based in Melbourne, mother and daughter duo, Metina and Ashlyn, have both secured their dream roles at the same school thanks to an AGA* traineeship.

As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and Apprentice and Employment Service (AES), AGA offers individuals the chance to work while they study through specialised traineeship programs, like the one completed by Metina and Ashlyn.

With no prior experience in education, their traineeship allowed them to explore a career in teaching, earn while learning and make a positive impact in their community.

After high school, 19-year-old Ashlyn was working odd jobs and felt uncertain about her future. Inspired by her mother’s traineeship, she decided to give it a try. Ashlyn reached out to AGA and discovered more opportunities at a local specialist school, working alongside senior secondary students.

Ashlyn’s journey not only ignited her passion but also paved a clear career path in education. She credits AGA for these opportunities, which opened many doors and helped her find her calling. She’s even been offered additional support work outside of school.

“I started my traineeship at the school’s campus and absolutely fell in love with the job,” Ashlyn said. “I found my calling, working with kids and making a difference. I could relate to their struggles, having gone through struggles in high school not long ago myself, and that made my work incredibly meaningful.”

While Ashlyn was just starting her career, her mum Metina, was already a successful real estate professional with over two decades of experience, but admitted to “always having teaching at the back of my mind.”

Inspired by her sisters who were already educators, she decided to pursue a traineeship. “It’s a fantastic starting point for anyone considering education,” she shared. “It gives you a genuine feel for the job and helps you determine if it’s right for you.”

Unlike Ashlyn, Metina works with primary school students and couldn’t be happier with her new role. “I absolutely love my job,” she said, noting the benefits of earning while studying and highlighting the hands-on nature of the course, explaining, “You apply what you learn immediately. Working in a school while studying makes the lessons stick. You see teachers using the methods you’ve learned, and everything just clicks.”

Education Support Traineeship is an entry level role for anyone interested in working in education. It involves helping students with varied learning needs, including those with disabilities, across primary, secondary and special education schools. The one-year course offers hands-on training, with students graduating with a Certificate III in School-Based Education Support at the end.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an Education Support worker for Metina is witnessing the students’ growth and building relationships with them. “Seeing the students develop and striving to help them reach their full potential is what I love most.”

Metina and Ash found the course provided by AGA lifechanging and the support from their Apprentice and Employment Consultant, Jo Conte, was exceptional. With a deep passion for training and education, plus years of experience, Jo was their rock throughout the journey. She provided training support, answered questions and checked in regularly to ensure they were flourishing in their roles.

Now, both are eager to advance their careers in education. They plan to enrol in a teaching degree next year.

Ashlyn’s advice to anyone considering a career in Ed Support or education is simple, “I’d genuinely recommend it to anyone. If you’re considering it, go for it. Dive in and see if it’s right for you. It’s definitely a great job if you enjoy working with kids.”
