Maria Papastamatis has made a significant impact on dozens of vulnerable young people in North East Melbourne through AGA’s Transition to Work program (TtW), helping them overcome homelessness and secure employment opportunities.
Four years ago, Maria was unemployed, living out of her car, and trying to get her small business off the ground. She was also dealing with a divorce from her ex-wife and struggling to find financial stability as a single mother. “For seven months, my clothes were in the back of my car. I was lucky to have a relative who let me sleep on her couch because I was completely broke, unemployed, and trying to start a business,” Maria shared.
Now, Phoenix Source and Select is one of Australia’s leading talent acquisition, recruitment and outsourcing platforms. Maria is using her lived experiences to bridge the gap between candidates and employers from all backgrounds.
Maria discovered AGA*’s Transition to Work (TtW) program by chance when she visited their Epping hub. She was connected with several young people there who were facing similar hardships or extreme barriers, and identified with their challenges. AGA partnered with Maria, recognising her previous lived experience, coupled with her business success, formed a powerful combination that could significantly benefit their young participants.
“Our alliance with organisations such as AGA stems from my passion and experience from being disadvantaged and it was clear we shared the same values helping people. I know what it’s like struggling to find employment, I know what it’s like to couch surf or ration our money for your next meal. Our culture is all about helping people and helping them to exceed their milestones,” Maria said.
Aimed at 15 to 24-year-olds, Transition to Work (TtW) program is a specialised pre-employment program which helps participants enter the workforce or further education and training by helping them develop practical skills, find local job opportunities and connect with local community services.
Participants can gain car licences, certificates and accreditations, and Employment Coaches work with participants in any area they need support with to help them enter the workforce. By integrating her business resources with AGA’s TtW program, Maria hasn’t only provided employment opportunities but also tailored support to help disadvantaged youth become job and interview ready.
Her commitment extends beyond mere recruitment — she engages actively with participants, offering mentorship and support, placing an emphasis on personal growth and community support, “It’s about giving back and having the same opportunities, not only at work, but personally, too and everyone deserves an opportunity. Everyone deserves a second chance. Everyone deserves to be heard. That’s what we’ve always been about, and that’s what we will always be about,” she said.
AGA Employer Engagement Coordinator Nina D’Angelo said Maria is a shining example of resilience, compassion and the power of turning personal struggles into opportunities for others, “Her unwavering commitment to helping homeless youth has transformed the lives and continues to inspire those around her. We’re grateful to work with Maria in placing homeless youth into employment,” she said.
