AGA recently hosted the WorldSkills regional competition (Carpentry) at their Deer Park training centre, in conjunction with Builders Academy Australia.
Since 1981, WordSkills have worked to celebrate vocational education and training pathways for young people through their regional, national and international competitions. These skills-based competitions enable Australian apprentices and VET students to showcase their skills and talents across more than 45 trades.
Apprentices Nghia Bui (Andy), Andreas Tsombanopoulos, and Huy Nguyen represented AGA in the Carpentry competition, which saw them challenge three other apprentices from BAA.
Each of the six competitors participated in three sessions throughout the day, which were designed to test their carpentry skills and overall knowledge of the trade.
In the end it was a terrific result for AGA with all three apprentices performing beyond expectations. Huy proved to be very competitive in a talented field, Andreas took home the silver medal and Andy was thrilled to be awarded the gold medal for his efforts.
Andy will now go on to represent AGA in the national competition, which will be held in Perth in August 2020.
AGA Field Officer Rob Paladino and Trainer Mark Freyer provided support to each of the apprentices in the lead up to the competition, holding practice sessions and offering guidance to ensure they were well-prepared and able enjoy the experience as well as perform to the best of their ability.
Congratulations to Andy, Andreas and Huy on their efforts – we can’t wait to cheer Andy on in Perth later in the year.
